LCA ANNOUNCES MORE REQUESTS FOR BIDS ON LUNG CANCER RESEARCH PROGRAMS FUNDED THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

Washington, DC [August 6, 2009]—Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) said today that bids are now being requested for another $11.8 million of the $20 million lung cancer research project funded through the Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP).

The solicitation invited researchers to compete for $10.5 million available for collaborative research at multiple institutions that will speed new developments in early detection and treatment from the laboratory to the patient.

Also available is $1.2 million to cover the salaries and other expenses under the Promising Clinician Research Award program and $650,000 for the Clinical Fellow Research Awards.

Pre-application submissions for all categories are due by November 11 and final applications by December 3, 2009.

In addition to the $11.5 million open to competitive bidding this week, last week the CDMRP announced $1.2 million were available for Concept Awards, smaller individual grants of up to $75,000 each to foster the development of bold new ideas in lung cancer research.

Laurie Fenton Ambrose, LCA President & CEO, said it was gratifying to see the program moving forward.

DOD first began funding cancer research with a $25 million Congressional earmark for breast cancer research in 1994 and established the CDMRP.

“Our goal has been to add a lung cancer research program to the CDMRP portfolio especially in view of the higher risk for lung cancer among military personnel and the mission oriented focus the DOD can bring to lung cancer research,” she said.

“We are grateful for the Congressional support this has received,” she said.  “We have very high hopes for this program and will continue to work to secure additional funding”
