Securing increased federal research funding for lung cancer through the National Institutes for Health and National Cancer Institute

The federal government is by far the primary funder of cancer research in America.  Therefore, Lung Cancer Alliance focuses on ensuring that federal funding for lung cancer increases and that the National Institutes for Health and National Cancer Institute has accountability for the lung cancer research portfolio.  To accomplish this, Lung Cancer Alliance educates members of Congress about lung cancer and the specific challenges our research community faces.  This year Lung Cancer Alliance will continue its work to secure more funding for lung cancer research within the NIH and NCI.

Updates:

July 10, 2009 [Washington, DC] -- Today the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies released the proposed appropriations bill for FY2010.  Included in the funding is $30.966 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of which the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is one part.  This represents an increase of more than $941 million over FY09 and $500 million more than was requested in the President's budget proposal.

“Lung Cancer Alliance is pleased to see an increase in funding for NIH and NCI in 2010,” said LCA President and CEO, Laurie Fenton-Ambrose.  “However, now is the time to candidly reassess the funding priorities of these institutions in an open and transparent way.  We must break the cycle of underfunding and make lung cancer a research priority on par with its devastating public health impact.”

The LHHSERA Subcommittee’s finding and proposal will move to the full Appropriations Committee on July 17 for discussion and debate prior to final passage.

May 18, 2009 [Washington, DC] -- LCA Board Member Deborah Morosini and LCA President Laurie Fenton Ambrose participated in a Lethal Cancer Coalition meeting at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) with NCI Director John Niederhuber and senior staff.  The purpose was to present the case for a targeted comprehensive research grant program within NCI for cancers with 5 year survival rates below 50%.  LCA was joined by doctors and other leaders representing pancreatic, ovarian, liver, myeloma, and hepatitis B national patient advocate organizations.  To read the entire statement, click here.

February 24, 2009 [Washington, DC] -- LCA and several other lung cancer organizations sent a letter to the Acting Director of National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Director of National Cancer Institute (NCI) regarding the increase in funding to NIH through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  To view this letter, please click here.
